The Importance of Lubrication for Bearings
Lubrication plays a critical role in bearing performance and longevity. The type of lubricant and lubrication method directly affects the service life of bearings. Many instances of bearing failure are caused by poor lubrication, which leads to increased friction, wear, excessive heat, and vibration.
Lubricants are specially formulated to help bearings operate smoothly and reliably. They extend the fatigue life of the bearing and act as a protective barrier against environmental contaminants such as moisture, dust, and corrosive elements in the air, which can lead to rust and internal corrosion.
In addition to reducing friction and wear, lubricants serve several essential functions:
Heat dissipation
Rust prevention
Sealing
Impact cushioning
When selecting a lubricant, it is essential to consider the operating conditions of the bearing, including temperature, speed, load, and environment. Over time, lubricants degrade due to mechanical action, aging, and contamination, which reduces their effectiveness. Therefore, it is necessary to replenish or replace lubricants regularly, with the interval depending on factors such as stroke length and rotational speed.
Bearing covers can be divided into 3 types:
- Without cover: the steel ball can be seen directly (generally called OPEN)
- Iron cover: One-sided cover and two-sided cover (usually represented by Z and ZZ)
- Plastic cover: There are one-sided cover and two-sided cover, and the indications vary according to the brand
Brand | Contact | Contactless |
Koyo | 2RS | 2RU |
Nachi | 2NSE/2NSL | 2NKE |
NSK | DDU | VV |
NTN | LLU | LLB |
SKF | 2RSH/2RS1 | None |
FAG | 2RS/2HR | None |
Iron cover:The main function is to prevent dust. The iron cover has a higher speed but is not waterproof.
Plastic cover:Mainly for dust prevention, the seal can also prevent water, but the friction is greater, the speed it can withstand is lower than that of the iron cover, and the heat dissipation efficiency is worse than that of the iron cover.
